Dear Lanae,

Spring is always a time full of growth, new beginnings and bright-eyed hope.  This year is no exception.  Presidential candidates are cropping up all around us, the new SAM has blossomed into a beautiful, mature museum, and La Familia welcomes a fresh new face to its staff.  With all the changes I can't help but feel excited about the busy summer that's just around the corner.

In the Gallery: It was only a Dream

Tracy Curley
::
Mixed Media Prints

Opening::
Thursday May 3rd, 2007

Time::  6pm-9pm

Tracy Curley is fascinated by the word, "palimpsest."  It means to have the quality of being written on, rubbed away and written on over and over again.  Through the spontaneous but careful layering of media and imagery, Tracy  expresses these ancient themes and what exists but is unseen.  Microscopic organisms are burgeoning in our bodies and all around us, deeply affecting our lives and health, yet we cannot see them.  This biological layering correlates with the unseen aspects of our ancestry.

The strong Native American influence in Tracy's work and heritage is prevalent in her explorations of nature, progress, and symbolism as communication.

Tracy Curley's careful but bold choices have allowed her work to dramatically progress over the last year without losing purpose or vision.  There is a maturity and consistency to her development that is refreshing and never devoid of surprises.

    "It Was Only A Dream" is another triumph for Tracy Curley.

Chasing Tales:
A new review

"Like a tall icy-cold gin and tonic, Chasing Tales is by turns smooth, bittersweet, bracing, and refreshing. Largely taking place in three countries, the author deftly weaves together the threads of six bewildered lives into a surprising, yet sweetly familiar narrative and display of human emotions.

Early in the first the chapter this exciting tale grabs the reader until you are no longer a bystander but a truth-seeking rambler like the book's characters - caught up in the revelries and mourning that color their young lives. Wandering through the streets of Rome, Florence
, London, and a mysterious American city with the sextet, the reader is at home at once in the protagonists' complex days and nights of disquietude and longing. Rivers-Woods commands a facile handling of dialogue and description, drawing the reader into every moment.

Whether you're camping on the shore in Italy
, unpacking years of baggage with an estranged family member or grieving at graveside of a lost lover; the effect is the same - being completely caught under the book's spell. With its highly infectious banter and a skillfully-handled plot, Chasing Tales is the quintessential afternoon-in-the-sun read."             Rachel Bravemann

Lauren Barnhart Joins La Familia

     I have recently returned to the Seattle area from New York City where I gained valuable insights into creative industries.  I had a brief stint as a Literary Agent representing seven clients, and soon realized I am too much the artist and not enough the agent.  I left, taking a job assisting the artist Peter Max in his grand factory of psychedelic turned patriotic art.  he deemed me to his assistant as "One of the better looking ones."

    In my free time I performed as a belly dancer and percussionist with the group, Kukurudu, and was lucky enough to grace the very weathered stage at CBGB's (I danced barefoot).  I soon fell in love with the mandolin and now write music and lyrics for a style of music that has been termed Psychedelic Folk. Through all of this, I have never stopped writing about strange oddities and interesting people.
    My mission at the gallery will be to further our network in the professional realm, establishing more contacts to broaden the awareness of the artists represented at La Familia.  I will be involved with editing the newsletter, marketing events, and taking the gallery into new directions including leasing artwork and choosing an assortment of literary journals for purchase within the gallery.
    I am excited to to be a part of La Familia Gallery and further our mission strengthening and fostering creativity in the community.
